Laparoscopic Surgery in Suspected Appendicitis

Abstract

|
Laparoscopic surgery is developing speciality in surgery and being accepted as having many advantages.
From may 1993 to July 1994, 334 patients of suspected appendicitis were operated, and among them 156 patients were operated with laparoscopic approach and 178 were with conventional procedure.
Operative time and method, postoperative hospital days and postoperative morbidity were reviewed. Mean operative time was 35 minuted in laproscopic group and 44 minutes in conventional group. Mean postoperative hospital days were 2.4 days in
laparoscopic group and 5.3 days in conventional group. There were lower morbidities in laparoscopic group as comared with conventional group.
In this review, laparoscopic approach in suspected appendicitis allows patient to shorter hospitalization, lower morbidities, good cosmetic results and earlier return to normal activities and surgeon can evaluate the abdominal cavity of the
patient
with
equivocal signs of appendicitis.
